Calendar of Events

February 7, 2001    Student Tolerance Day: (1:00 PM at Zebulon B. Vance High School) A program for all students and 
                                teachers to learn about human rights and Kerry Kennedy Cuomo.
 
                                Dramatic interpretation of Speak Truth to Power: (1:00 PM at Vance High School) Vance High 
                                School students performed a 15-minute play they developed, inspired by Ms. Kennedy Cuomo's 
                                book Speak Truth to Power, to commence Student Tolerance Day activities.

 

February 14, 2001
                                High School Writing Competition: (Deadline, Feb. 14) Students were invited to submit a 1,000 - 1,500 
                                word essay on the question: "Why should people who aren’t directly affected by human rights abuses 
                                take action to address them?" Three prizes (First prize, $250; Second prize, $125; and Third prize, $50) 
                                were awarded on Wednesday, February 28th at Z.B. Vance High School. Read the winning entry here.
  
                                High School Art Competition: (Deadline, Feb. 14) Students were invited to create a piece of original artwork 
                                for The Kerry Kennedy Cuomo Project video documentary cover. One first place winner received a $250 
                                prize to be awarded on Wednesday February 28th at Z.B. Vance High School. The winner’s artwork was 
                                be featured on the cover of The Kerry Kennedy Cuomo Project video documentary.
 
 
February 28, 2001
                                Student Dialogue with Kerry Kennedy Cuomo: (1:00 PM, Vance High School) Over 600 students and
                                teachers from 19 area schools attended.
 
                                News Conference with Kerry Kennedy Cuomo: (2:15 PM, at Vance High School) Media representatives 
                                were invited to participate in a question and answer session with Ms. Kennedy Cuomo.
                      Book Signing: (3:30 – 4:30 PM, Borders Books and Music, 3900 Colony Road) Kerry
                      Kennedy Cuomo was available to sign her new book Speak Truth to Power, which profiles 51 human
                      rights defenders.
  
                      Second Annual Echo Award Dinner: (6:30 PM. Piedmont Ballroom at Hilton Charlotte & Towers,   
                      222 E. 3rd Street) Kerry Kennedy Cuomo delivered the keynote address and Charlottean Bishop            
                      George E. Battle, Jr. was awarded the Echo Award Against Indifference.
 
The Kerry Kennedy Cuomo Project Documentary: Charlotte videographers collaborated to produce a documentary of the 
Student Dialogue and Kerry Kennedy Cuomo’s visit for distribution to high schools nationwide.
 
Curriculum Materials Available: Educational packets focusing on global human rights issues were available to area middle school 
and high school teachers.
