Second Annual Echo Award Dinner
This year's recipient was Bishop George E. Battle, Jr. Bishop Battle has been recognized throughout the Charlotte community for his dedication to public service. Recently, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte for his impact in improving human relations, involvement in many community causes, and his steadfast devotion to justice and humanity. Bishop Battle has had a substantial impact on Charlotte youth. He founded Gethsemane Enrichment Program in 1975, which has been recognized for its commitment to empowering underprivileged children with numerous awards, including an Audrey Nelson Community Development National Achievement Award in 1989. Bishop Battle also served as a dedicated member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board from 1978 to 1995.
